Tower of Power XVII - History in the Making

Win, lose, or draw; Marz & Violent`J will make history when they defend the Duo Division Championship for the 16th time during tomorrow's Supercard 85: Tower of Power XVII!

The Tower of Power will mark their 364th day as undefeated Duo Division Champions. A feat unrivalled in history by any other team. If they win, they will cross the threshold of an entire calendar year, but with history so important to this match, what do the previous sixteen Towers of Power tell us about their chances?

Champions have successfully retained their title an overwhelming ten times in past Tower of Power events! Those fighting from the coveted #1 position have risen to claim gold four times. The lowest numbers to ever produce a new champion are #2 and #3 -- once each, at Tower of Power IV and Tower of Power XII. Both of these instances were Duo Division Championship winners: Genku & ShingoEX (February 19, 2012) and Damo & DeathScepter (February 22, 2015).

The Duo Division Championship has only been retained four times in the Tower of Power format -- or roughly 57% from seven Towers of Power. Marz & Violent`J are one of those teams, having successfully defended the titles against #1 team Damo & DeathScepter in July, at Supercard 80: Tower of Power XVI. This was the only time Team Xtreme has competed in the Tower of Power format!

Supercard 85 will mark the first time The Tower of Power has ever been erected in October.

Of the seven Towers of Power to take place in the second half of the year, only one has seen a successful title change: Tower of Power XIV (September 20, 2015). That event is memorable for ending the third championship reign of Damo & DeathScepter, who set a record of 10 title defenses over an uninterrupted stretch of 210 days. The winning team was Ratt & NightHawk - who are also the only team in history to have beaten Marz & Violent'`J in The Great Arena!

Ratt & NightHawk were supposed to challenge Marz & Violent`J during Supercard 84: Return to the Dark Carnival, but were forced to withdrawn contention due to attacks on NightHawk. They are not expected to compete in Tower of Power XVII, even though a seventh team is yet to be announced for the Challenger 7.

No Challenger 7 fighter (or team) has ever successfully reached the top of The Tower. Marz was the closest, fighting as an individual to reach the #2 rung at Tower of Power V. The best performance by a duo came at Tower of Power XIV when Pink_Ranger & Ghostdragon reached #4. They beat their own record of #5 from Tower of Power IV. #5 is the next best solo effort, reached by TonyTheTiger at Tower of Power VII and VenoMark at Tower of Power XI.

The deepest runs within The Tower itself came at Tower of Power XIII when Ratt unsuccessfully challenged for the title from #7 spot. The best duo was The_Purple_Bunny & Philip94, who reached the title match from #6 at Tower of Power VIII.

What does it all mean? History tells of great uncertainty for the reigning Duo Division Champions! They may have had their successes at the event in the past, but the trials faced by defending champs are almost evenly split between win and loss! Will Marz & Violent`J achieve the unprecedented act of defending their titles for 364 consecutive days? Be here tomorrow for full results from a historic Supercard 85: Tower of Power XVII!
