The 2010 Launch

On Thursday December 30, 2010, cheevments changed forever!
With the initiation of cheev #5000, a new storyline and related features were officially unlocked for users in #MortalKombat and #MicksDesk, paving the way for the first ever "RPCheev"!

The change in status quo was laid out in cheevs leading up to #5000, which was pre-scripted to unlock both the RPCheev plot outline and brand new !fight system. The following represents select excerpts of logs from the automated launch.

[11:07:33] <@Mick> CaTigeReptile unlocked achievement #4991: RPCheev Villager Justin Beiber: "Hello, CaTigeReptile. Do you believe in the prophecy about a great cheevpocalypse? I am very afraid!..."

[11:21:11] <@Mick> DArqueBishop unlocked achievement #ERROR: So it was, in the Cheevment Kingdom, that all seemed well. The people cheeved their cheevs and their gamerscores did swell.

[11:30:22] <@Mick> I've been looking forward to that WAAAAAAAY more than I should've

For quite some time (since approx. #4000), occasional cheevs featured cryptic binary messages, or occasional "glitches" that referred back to already prompted cheevs. These were the confused messages of "Cheevment 2501," which was first introduced as a concept with cheev #2501. Messages referenced key players in previous cheev events, as well as vague warnings about the coming of dire changes as part of the build to the launch of the new features.

Villager dialogues were also introduced into the random cheev message mix to foreshadow the changes. They made standard RPG-esque references to an unknown threat in surrounding villages, as well as sharing names of soon-to-be introduced characters from the "!RPCheev NPC" list.

While the RPCheev storyline has waned since the launch, the effects of the changes have completely changed the way the script has been used. !fights and the surrounding mechanics have become a daily exercise for the various players who participate, expanding the "cheev" script beyond its origins as a simple random message generator, and reference to the triviality of modern video game 'reward system' conventions. Since the 2010 launch, well in excess of 20,000 cheevs have been triggered as part of the game (by September).

The following collection of logs and tongue-in-cheek commentaries were originally compiled at the time of their realization, in March, 2010. They represent the first significantly developed narrative that ran through the "cheevment" script, which is believed to have been running since some time in 2009 [approx. November].

The RPCheev concept in its fully fleshed out design [as created in all aspects by Mike Haseloff, aka; Mick] was still eight months away, but the sense of development was certainly confirmed, at this point. The following parody 'DVD extras' reveal some of the development that led to the present day. Additional references have been added (October 4, 2011).

In the M.Lucifer script system, cheevment based scripts are considered especially hocus-pocus, hoi polloi, hoary and harmonica. In #mortalkombat, the dedicated users who commit these prompts are members of an elite squad known as the Special Cheevments Unit. This is their story.

Yes. Life in #mortalkombat returned to normal, with the timeline readjusting around a new world of cheevs. Disaster was averted by DArqueBishop and these intrepid time travelling cheevsters, but what about the world that was? The world they interacted with. The following is vital backcheev to the cheev saga, included in this special edition director's cut extended log.

Now, for the first time ever in a txt file, we present special behind the scenes extras, including the making of the cheevs, extra timeline information, and special director commentar.

[MICK, Director] Yeah. Yeah, man. I didn't know if we were going to pull it off. I was just hoping that no one would get hurt, because there were a lot of stunts involved in putting this thing together. It's hard. People see the magic, but the magician isn't really doing a lot. I'm just the pretty face that takes credit for all of this stuff, man. It's the guys in the shadows who actually make the magic happen.

[17:32:49] <Mick> DECEPTION unlocked achievement #2020: When the world is in peril, Jeff Goldblum is our only hope...! Independence Cheev!

Yeah, you can see here, this is some of the bare bones of stuff.
There's a counter going, that's %acheev. Make sure you don't trip over that, guys. Just... Yeah, watch your feet. Oh! Hah! Right now it's "%acheev 2020", we just had DECEPTION trigger it, which was a movie reference. It was supposed to be a sight gag. You know? Like 2020 vision, but that didn't work out in the editing stage. Hey, DECEPTION! Nice work, bud!

else { inc %acheev | msg $chan  $+ $nick unlocked achievement $chr(35) $+ %acheev $+ : $read(C:\My Documents\cheevments.txt) $+ ! | achever | halt }

You can see there that it's kinda backwards, the way we did it.
I mean... It was just going to be this silly joke, a bit of a commentary on how silly and arbitrary video game achievements are. They're a hollow way of extending the game, y'know? So this silly wording sort of turned into an overnight phenomenon. It was never meant to continue. So, the coding is a little askew on specific triggers.

"%acheev 1998" triggers 1999, because the tally is made live at the time, rather than after the previous one. So it can get a little bit confusing and... I don't like that we tied ourselves into the exclamation mark. I think that was a mistake, but once the production's in place, nobody really wants to rock the boat.

[16:49:21] <Mick> Genku unlocked achievement #2015: Genku!!! We've got to go back to cheevment #1985! If we don't, the future you know will cease to exist!!!

For the special time travel cheevs, there were a few systems that had to be put in place. We had to do a lot of research, because there was continuity to consider. Through the course of the story, the time travelling cheevsters witness the past unfolding again, so you had to make sure everything lined up properly.

What really attracted me to the project was the story.
TonyTheTiger made this reference to Back to the Future and sort of put that out there and then after a couple of pitch meetings the story was hatched out, based on his suggested reference. The concept was great, that's what really sold it, I think. So we got a script written and it was designed to be interactive. To be ready for anyone. So there were a lot of $nick triggers, which means it just repeats whoever triggers the cheev.

[16:55:08] <Mick> Cr0w unlocked achievement #1990A: Now DeathScepter has triggered #1990! Think, Fat Cr0w! Every cheev we spend in the past threatens the future and I fear brings DArqueBishop's plans closer to fruition!!!

DArqueBishop was chosen at random when the 1985A cheev was triggered. The part of the time travelling "red herring" wasn't written for anyone particular. I thought he really brought a lot to the part, though. I mean, he already has such a presence, so there was an unwritten quality to his portrayal of the time traveller that told you he was going to have a significant role to play. I don't think anyone knew the twist! I don't think!

Pink_Ranger was written in at the script stage, but she was a real sport about it. She brought a lot of energy to the script and helped flesh the concept out.

[14:11:48] <@Pink_Ranger> cheevment
[14:11:48] <Mick> Pink_Ranger unlocked achievement #2000: Cheevs to the left of me! Pink_Ranger to the right! Here I am, stuck in a cheevment with you!

There was a lot of excitement about the original 2000 cheev, and she had this great line about... about how she got the 1k cheev and should let someone else get 2k. Then she swoops in and gets it. So, really, I mean, she helped the story after that initial TonyTheTiger concept. Then by coming in with the time travelling, I mean, she had this great dual role in the story which was just so interesting.

She's trying to make sure she gets it again. She can't, of course, but that was the fun of the end, I think. There was a halt to stop her triggering the second 2000. Haha. Very fun!

[14:09:51] <@Pink_Ranger> i guess since i got cheev #1k i could be nice and let someone else get #2k. time to pass the torch

Plans for a sequel?... I'm not sure I should say.
There are ideas. I think there's some material that could definitely be explored, but I think we'll just have to see how the $nick's rack up the %acheev and see what happens.

[14:15:05] <TonyTheTiger> 2015 should be a back to the future one, right?
[14:15:16] <DeathScepter> right
[14:15:17] <Genku> cheev
[14:15:17] <Mick> Genku unlocked achievement #2002: Genku has a low tolerance for cheevs and lactose!

[October 4, 2011 Additional Commentary, MICK]
Haha! It all seems so primitive and innocent!

It's nice to be able to look back on it, because really, this was the testing grounds for RPCheev. Nobody knew it at the time, but it was definitely the moment where we thought about doing more with it. More than just a wacky trigger, y'know? It was going to become a system and a game. There was an idea for a more literal storyline sequel, but even then, I knew I wanted to go somewhere else with it.

"Cheevment 2501" and the introduction of 'RPCheev Villager' communications in cheevs were an extension of the 'Back to the Cheev' design. Over time it has become about subverting the expectations of cheevs, as much as playing with the language that has been developed around them. There isn't a concrete, single definitive context, but a range of inflections and meanings. The numbers can change, the dialogues can be framed differently, and the points can mean other things.

It's funny looking back on some of the technical aspects. With the expansion of combat and the new roles "cheevs" have taken on, a lot of the mechanics have become much more complex, but also refined. It's still a bit 'gaffa tape' in some places, but for the most part, it's all been refined and made as efficient as it can be.

I think of this as part of the RPCheev canon, definitely.
Most of the major players are still involved in one mode, or another. When we introduced the major RPCheev storylines of Lord Mislukking and the "Cheevment Kingdom" and all of that, it was definitely with the knowing that this backstory would be available to come back into play at some point. I don't know if it will, in that sense, but it's definitely there. It was intended to be important.

I enjoy looking back on the camaraderie and relationships that formed around cheevs. I enjoy the sense of timeline and history and all the meta-textual layers that have been attached to simple phrases and words. The game has changed a lot since then and you just can't copy, or steal that. RPCheev has canonized the people as much as the carefully considered mechanics and ideas that make it all work. Some people just won't understand that.

And now you know...? (FOR NOW!)
-yellow eyes- -evil laugh- -stfu gtfo- XD XD LMAO XD

[2011] I don't know what the future holds.
2012 is coming and I have some ideas. Obviously there are still on-going tweaks and refinements that go in to the RPCheev concept. Necessary functions for certain Quest ideas are there, but the machinery for the quests themselves has to be put into place. There are also ideas about expanding the userbase in ways that might be interesting. It's always been about an accumulation of details and ideas and I've tried to make sure it was always receptive to that, functionally, and idealistically.

I think it all started in 2009 and you have to expect that the expansion we've seen might be iterated on further by next year. We'll see. You have to have some faith in the economy of ideas and know that what is here is always here, and what it means can change and adapt as time goes. Additions and subtractions just means new dimensions. That's how smart people create. Everything old can be new again, and vice versa.

It started as a parody of game achievements -- a response to [Shoe and Hokey] talking about them as a commodity. Now it's a beat 'em up cum RPG.

[17:03:37] <@Cr0w> now it skips ahead?!
[17:03:47] <@Pink_Ranger> no were back to the main timeline plz
