Olympic Games 2012 - Day 1

Day 1 of these Olympic Games produced the first wave of what is sure to be a complex and mixed field of competitions. For the most part, it battle by the numbers, progress unsurprising, even if the details were a peculiar mix. Not everyone competed up to standard, but before the day did end, every combatant would have his or her moment.

Medals in the Round Robin Tournament will be both the most sought after, and most difficult to claim. The only event with guaranteed representation of every competing nation -- the Round Robin has the densest field, forcing relegation on a good many fighters who will no doubt feel they had a greater argument than some of their surpassing contemporaries. Only the top two competitors in four continental biases will progress to the finals, eliminating up to eight competitors in a single round.

Region-based pools will consist of: Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe A & B, and The Americas.
Day 1 would highlight the most controversial of this format, the African pool containing only three fighters representing Israel, Nigeria, and UAE, respectively. Two-man allocation would mean only one of the pool would be eliminated, while earlier, no less than four fighters of the Asia-Pacific region would face instant elimination.

With every competitor facing the other, Shamrock and "The Iron Menace" ElJobber were the first to enjoy their run into the finals, dominant in the Asia-Pacific pool. Shamrock secured an impressive perfect sweep, challenged only by New Zealand Captain, DaMo. Indeed, DaMo was among the most competitive of this pool, but only managed 4th, hampered by humble victories that failed to match the greater impact ratings of India's Rockey316 -- who was bolstered by a +3 over vaiisekk.

The Malaysian managed a shock victory over DaMo, but was by far the most beleaguered of the pool, the victim of the harshest defeat of the day -- a staggering +20 decimation by CaTigeReptile, who clearly felt frustrated as she underperformed against her contemporaries. She will no doubt be looking to make-up for it as she contests medals in the 3way, KFL and Battle Royal events -- all of which promise more favourable odds for the lone Chinese representative.

Newcomer The_Rock and veteran CCShadow were elementary qualifiers in the African contingent, leaving kingjolly a disappointing early exit after two hard fought matches. In the KFL contest, two of the favourites of Pool B faced off as jack4813 (USA) and Ninja_Mime (CAN) kicked their hemisphere off. A former Champion, jack4813 may have had the favourites edge, but a +3 result in Ninja_Mime's favour clearly reversed that! Nephrite set himself up for a tense contest in Pool A, an elementary win over Finland's Zmoke.

[Group A] Nephrite (HRV) d. Zmoke (FIN) [+1]
Nephrite picks up a tough but convincing victory in the opening match against Finland's Zmoke. Coming into these Olympics an outsider prospect for the KFL title, Nephrite may have hoped to do more than a minimum +1 impact. Group A promises some of the most closely matched battles, making damage points the vital difference between glory and infamy.

Group B starts with a bang as two of the favourites collide in a battle of borders! Ninja_Mime has to emerge an early favourite in the pools, securing a solid +3 victory over former Champion, jack4813! Team USA will be looking for a big win to stay in the medal hunt as pools continue tomorrow!
