Weekly Rankings Recap - 2016 Year End

There are many paths to glory in The Great Arena. Championships unite the herd in their pursuit of excellence in a single spectacular collision - Tournaments demand feats of endurance that open the gateway to greatness. Somewhere between these both exist the league rankings!

As a purely mathematical exercise, league rankings reward the most winningest of fighters, charting their movements in the Weekly Rankings Recap. These ranks reset at the conclusion of every year, restarting the chase that ultimately concludes in the Master's Series. Here - we record the entire ranks for the 2016 Season, illuminating the final record and accolades for each ranking fighter!

There were 217 competitors taking part in Season 2016. It was a year of intense competition, fuelled by the launch of a second weekly programme, the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, the absorption of the KFL Championship into the main league, and war between all encompassing factions! It was also a pivotal year for the Duo Division, where a single team reigned across twelve months, and exciting new combinations forged contenders legacies! 2016 Master's Series - The Finals

The 2016 Master's Series brought the year to a crashing close with an intriguing Semi Final double header designed by four days of top ranking Heats!

The results from Class A and Class C meant reigning Duo Division Champions would meet in a friendly contest to determine which member of The United would make the final. A conspiratorial result reminiscent of their plans at Royal Roulette and rumors for Supercard 87, but it was merely a twist of fate that brought Artanix and Shoe against one another! They fought fair and well, but in the end, it was 2015 Master's Series Runner-Up Artanix who earned the first place!

The second bout proved decidedly more one-sided: Runner-up to the 2011 and 2012 Master's Series' ElJobber intent on making his third appearance in the finals! He completely steamrolled over The Alliance leader AlbertBeefcake, taking him down to the tune of a +7 impact!

The Grand Final ensured a former Master's Series Runner-Up would finally graduate to the elite list of year-end winners! ElJobber, the former Undisputed Champion with both a Grand Slam Launch and Summer Grand Slam title to his name this year. United: Artanix, one-half of the reigning Duo Division Champions who made history by ending the indomitable 420 day reign of Team Xtreme!

They ran into the fight with reckless abandon -- the entire year culminating in one final epic match! ElJobber - the well rounded heavyweight hit hard with a perfect attack. Artanix - the Duo Division specialist showed a base rooted in technique. They each had their strong points, but in the end, there was a clear winner. Adding his third tournament crown for 2016, and his first long awaited Master's Series title - ElJobber finished the year on top! The perfect book end to his 2016 run!

As he basked in the glory of his long awaited win, ElJobber sent an ominous message: If "Contender Elect" Genku thought he was going to get an Undisputed Championship match just because a bunch of idiots voted for him - he would have another thing coming! He beat Genku in Class B and at the 2017 Battle Royale in January - he would once again become the Undisputed Champion!

2016 Master's Series - Class D Heats

The final group of the 2016 Master's Series appeared to be the most unpredictable of the four rankings based assemblies. There was no definitive stand-out in the Class D Heats, the only Round Robin class to feature a field of Under 5k fighters specializing in Duo Division matches.

The opening bout proved just how evenly matched Class D would be. Politics and Jason_Voorhees colliding in a near draw! It was The Invasion fighter who would narrowly secure victory, forcing Politics to depart the grueling encounter for an immediate clash with Scott-Howell! The unenviable task was a seemingly foregone conclusion - Scott-Howell confident in victory. AlbertBeefcake finished Politics' winless run, summoning an incredible attack to comprehensively win!

The Invasion collapsed shockingly in the final week of Monday Night Invasion, and Jason_Voorhees fell apart in a similar fashion in his second bout. Scott-Howell completely dominated the match, executing a +10 impact that put him firmly at the top of the Class D qualifying table!

AlbertBeefcake took his turn with Jason_Voorhees, recalling the rivalry that began with Jason's betrayal of The Alliance back at the beginning. Once upon a time they were ICWW Tag Team Champions, but now they were bitter rivals. Voorhees summoned a much stronger offense for the grudge match, but Albert never the less earned a solid win, setting up another sudden death decider!

Throughout 2016 AlbertBeefcake and Scott-Howell had played rivals in the Duo Division rankings.  Last week saw The Alliance overtake CCShadow & Howell in the ranks, and AlbertBeefcake seemed determined to overtake Howell in the 2016 Master's Series! It was by far the hardest hitting match of this round of Heats. AlbertBeefcake qualifying for the Semi Finals!

2016 Master's Series - Class C Heats

Like his partner Jammer2Omega in the Class B Heats; Porygonix faced long odds as a last minute qualifier entering Class C Heats for the 2016 Master's Series!

His field wasn't populated with the same degree of heavyweight opposition, but his first opponent would be the Class C favourite: "The Guardian" CaTigeReptile! CTR lived up to the hype as she introduced the 2016 Duo Division prospect with a hard hitting, convincing win. He could've been forgiven for staggering into another loss, but Porygonix rallied for his second match against 3-time Division 2 Champion: Benjamin!

With an unlikely win at his back, Porygonix then stepped up to an opponent that interested him greatly - reigning Duo Division Champion: Shoe! The United fighter made history at Supercard 87: End Of Days by combining with Artanix to upset "Team Xtreme" Marz & Violent`J -- ending their 420 day streak as Duo Division Champions! For hopeful title challenger Porygonix, the tournament match was a chance to test himself against one-half of the new champs! A test that burnt him terribly as Shoe unleashed a whirlwind offense against the lone Duo rising star!

CaTigeReptile repeated her +3 rated success with a second comprehensive win, over Benjamin, but found stiff opposition when revisiting her major rival prior to the war with The Invasion! Shoe had the edge in their final encounter at Supercard 86: Survivor Sequence - Invasion, and one-on-one he was able to catch The Guardian on the back foot, as well! They fought hard, but CaTigeReptile's post-war celebrations were put on hold as Shoe secured an equalizing second victory!

With with a +5 impact rating advantage of CaTigeReptile, Shoe didn't even need to win his final match to qualify for the Semi Finals. For Benjamin, it was an opportunity to pick up a win against a casual, over confident opponent. Alas, Shoe was simply too good! An effortless win confirming his unblemished Class C win. His qualification sets up an intriguing contest of Duo Division Champions - Artanix versus Shoe our first confirmed Semi Final match!

2016 Master's Series - Class B Heats

Jammer2Omega may have been regretting his efforts to qualify for the 2016 Master's Series on Day 2 - the Class B Heats. Of the four classes assembled, it was B widely tipped to be the most hotly contested, populated with some of the biggest names in The Great Arena!

J2O was quickly thrown into the fire as newly minted Hall of Famer Hokey started the trial off with a comprehensive, if non-violent win. ElJobber was less forgiving in his total domination of the Duo Division star - forgiving at only a +7 rated impact! "Invasion Contender Elect" Genku finished the gauntlet of hard knocks with another +7 rated defeat! Hard lessons for the winless Jammer2Omega, but valuable experience as he rides his 2016 successes into a bright future.

With the aberration out of the way, the Master's Series contenders lined up to duke it out for a spot in the final! ElJobber got himself an early lead, fighting 2016 rival Hokey to a competitive result. The Hall of Famer ramped up his efforts for his last chance to qualify for the Master's Series final, but so too did scandalized Invasion Contender Genku! The stakes were reflected in the hard hitting duel - Genku able to eke out a much needed win!

With 2 wins and a +8 impact rating to their names: ElJobber and Genku entered a sudden death face-off! For Genku, it was a desperately needed opportunity to correct his January contention prospects, jeopardized by a loss at Supercard 87: End Of Days, the shocking finale of Monday Night Invasion, and accusations of Electoral Fraud! He attacked the battle with appropriate gusto, but ElJobber wasn't backing down! The two-time Master's Series runner-up sat December out, and that may have been the difference. ElJobber wrestling his way to qualification for the Semi Finals!

2016 Master's Series - Class A Heats

The December 16 fall of ShawnMichaels ensured it was an anomalous start to the 2016 Master's Series. The #13 fighter's inability to compete meant a unique situation where only three fighters would contest the Class A Heats -- a predicament that played out in the most difficult way!

United: Artanix and The_Hurricane looked like two fighters who'd just fought an entire year when they kicked off the event. The fatigued performances enabled The_Hurricane to eke out a win over one half of the Duo Division Champions. A result that was quickly remedied as Artanix lifted his game against reigning KFL Champion Banging!

The United emerged as a title holding powerhouse from Supercard 87: End Of Days. Their bravado continued on the year's final Monday Night Invasion, where they boldly proclaimed they "cancelled" The Invasion! As KFL Champion, Banging has been The Invasion's hope at the year's close. He lived up to that status, pushing Artanix to the wire in a hard fought match. He couldn't get the much needed win, though. A result that put The_Hurricane in the driver's seat -- the last fighter able to earn a second victory from the Class A Heats!

Banging maintained his competitive level in the third match, earning a solid victory against his Alliance rival. The third result decided with a minimum +1 impact, it meant all three competitors tied with one win each! This forced Class A into a three-way sudden death match, where Banging fell to The_Hurricane in the first elimination. Only for United: Artanix to turn on the magic - dominating the final stage to confirm his advancement to the Semi Finals!

2016 Master's Series - Heats Preview

Each year the season of competition is brought to an official close with a special, ceremonial round robin known as The Master's Series. This unique tournament event is reserved exclusively for the Top 16 fighters ranked at the end of the calendar year. These final results determine the final count for the league's best, testing them in evenly dispersed pools before advancing to Semi Final fights.

This year there will be an anomaly in the Round Robin field: #13 fighter ShawnMichaels was cut down on December 16, and will be unable to compete. This means there will only be three fighters designated to Class A Heats, retaining a bye in acknowledgment of ShawnMichaels' position.

Weekly Rankings Recap - 12/25/2016

Uhhh... What? Did anybody see that coming!? Supercard 87: End Of Days set a bad tone for the top fighters in The Invasion, but nobody could've seen the complete domination they'd suffer during the final Monday Night Invasion of the year! Especially the surprise role The United had to play!

Is this the end of The Invasion? The United seem to think they've "cancelled" the warring faction (with some valuable help from The Alliance and The Koalition). They may just have the power to make that happen, too! All of a sudden The United are large and in charge, holding the Undisputed Championship (Mimik), Duo Division Championship (Shoe & Artanix) and Div. 2 Championship (Murdoink)! Even with Hokey announcing an end to his career with his Hall of Fame Induction, it seems like the future belongs to The United!

The Invasion's only hope may be Banging! He not only carries the KFL Championship into 2017, but also managed to avoid the complications stemming from The Invasion Election. Is there anything to Violent`J's shocking claims of electoral tampering this week? "Inversion Contender Elect" Genku could find his January 29th title goals in jeopardy. It could all be riding on how he performs in this year's Master's Series Round Robin - spread out across five days of action, next week.

Friday Night Fights (December 23, 2016)

The final Friday Night Fights of 2016 was a relatively sedate affair, free from The Invasion attacks that have turned it into an escalating war zone. Only one representative made his way back to FNF in the chill of December, to settle a score as rooted in personal desire, as faction loyalty.

"American Nightmare" LordSkarlet was on top of the world when former KFL Champion Statix arrived to challenge him during last week's Monday Night Invasion. Intent on ending the year right, LordSkarlet requested a rematch. It was a much closer struggle, but LordSkarlet still found himself edged out by The Alliance fighter. Even so, he accepted the holiday defeat, looking forward to the uncertain future of the next year.

There was a sense of symmetry to the final weekly event of the year. Just as they did during the first for the year, "Portuguese Pegasus" Zentile and United: Murdoink did battle for the Division 2 Championship. The roles were reversed. This time it was Murdoink defending the title, having been the only champion to defend their title at End Of Days. It was an incredibly close battle, but just as it had way back in January, the match went the way of Murdoink.

Next week will see the 2016 Master's Series unfold over five days of action. Reserved for the Top 16 ranks of the year, Jammer2Omega and Porygonix were given the opportunity to qualify for the event, requiring victory in individual matches against Mark and Leroy. J2O maintained his win/loss advantage over Porygonix, putting Mark down with a +2 impact. The dual victories mean both of the Duo Division stars will qualify for the annual Round Robin!

Koalition allies "The Guardian" CaTigeReptile and "The New Generation" DECEPTION, Baraka_MK & Onryo watched over all events in the snow covered coliseum. Their intervention - unrequired on a relatively peaceful, quiet winter's night. They shared a warm moment, just enjoying the atmosphere without worry.

Violent`J Claims Electoral Fraud

Violent`J has never pretended to be a fan of "Invasion Contender Elect" Genku, but after arguing with him on the last edition of Monday Night Invasion for 2016, he's come out with a scathing accusation that could tear The Invasion apart!

The Y2Juggalo claims to have proof that The Invasion Election was tampered with to ensure Genku's victory. He's calling Genku's status as Contender Elect fraudulent, and is demanding a thorough investigation to properly remove him from the Undisputed Championship race in January.

It's just more problems for Genku and The Invasion, who suffered key defeats at Supercard 87: End Of Days, and were comprehensively defeated by their enemies on the last Monday Night Invasion. An event that ended with The United making a surprise follow-up to their historic Duo Division Championship win at Supercard 87 - declaring The Invasion cancelled!

As 2016 draws to an end, it seems the future is very uncertain! The Invasion only have tomorrow's Friday Night Fights to redirect the conversation, before Banging, Genku, and Invasion opposition "The Guardian" CaTigeReptile enter the year-end Round Robin: The 2016 Master's Series!

Hokey of Fame - Not Done Yet

With the 2016 Hall of Fame Induction Announcement came news that Hokey is calling it a day on his active career in The Great Arena.

Although nobody knew it for sure, the retirement has been a long time coming. It was the apparent impetus for Hokey cashing in his Royal Roulette title opportunity against a teammate, creating a rift in The United that extended beyond the Survivor Sequence title match.

Hokey says because of the tension he's caused he has decided to officially part ways with The United, thanking them for their friendship and their crucial role in his Hall of Fame career. His retirement has nothing to do with his competitive rivalry with Mimik, or his shock firing from The United earlier in the year. He simply feels the changing of the calendar is the right time.

Hokey has thanked everyone for cheering and jeering him through the various phases of his career. He gracefully accepts his place in the Hall of Fame, with a proviso - he isn't quite done yet!

Because of his Top 16 ranking, Hokey will be guaranteed qualification for the 2016 Master's Series round robin tournament. He also promises he'll make one last farewell run toward next year's Ultimate Grand Prix VII -- warning he wouldn't mind adding a fifth and final Undisputed Championship reign at the major!

2016 Hall of Fame Announcement

From the very first year of the competitive league: Hokey lived a charmed fighting life!

He quickly established a reputation as gatekeeper to finals success in the all important tournaments of the first year. Superstition reflected Hokey's natural success and fan-favourite status. Inevitably, it eventually gave way to early Undisputed Championship glory.

Hokey has emerged to be one of the greatest individual stars of the fighting league, this very year cementing his status as one of the greats with his fourth Undisputed Championship win. He hasn't been fighting alone, though. Early on he became one of the foundational factors of the Duo Division, setting the standard for tandem competition in his partnership with Mime. Their friendship and rivalry was key to Hokey's early success, and eventually gave way to the formation of the most awesome faction in league history: The United!

The United years were among Hokey's best. As part of the group, he held the distinction of being part of one of the only teams to ever defeat The Barons of Mislukking! He dominated the arena with the constantly evolving faction, entering into some of his most memorable feuds with DECEPTION, Ratt, ElJobber, The_Purple_Bunny, Genku, m0s, VenoMark and Pink_Ranger & Ghostdragon!

2016 saw Hokey go on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. He started as the Undisputed Champion, losing the title at Battle Royale. This began The United's journey with DArqueBishop as new team manager and Hokey's shock firing. He found solace with a new group carving out a piece of the arena - The Invasion. This alliance of circumstance sustained him as he worked his way back to the top of the league. When The United reformed at Royal Roulette, Hokey earned a pivotal victory. He beat DArqueBishop at All-Star Summer Showdown, and clashed with classic nemesis DECEPTION at Night of Champions V. With the end of his career in sight, Hokey cashed in his Royal Roulette opportunity against teammate Mimik, rolling the dice one last time to be Undisputed Champion!

Hokey will embark on a journey away from The Great Arena, but leaves an indelible mark as one of the all-time greats. His list of accolades now capped by his official induction into the Hall of Fame!
