Supercard 88: Battle Royale (2017)

It comes but once a year - an annual tradition that is a prize unto itself! Battle Royale is the ultimate test of endurance, bringing forty fighters together in a single match! They enter randomly at intervals of 90 seconds, the clock counting down on every fighter's dream to face the Undisputed Champion in the main event of Ultimate Grand Prix! At no time of the year do the numbers mean more, but in this game it's equal parts luck and skill!

Not all fighters are content to leave their destiny to chance! In the undercard, the lure of the spotlight and guaranteed gold is too great! This year, The United has all the gold heading in to Supercard 88 -- and everything to lose! UGP Season is upon us! Let the games begin!

39. The_Purple_Bunny (#23) elim. VenoMark (#3)
With only 7 confirmed qualifiers, the 2017 Battle Royale match arrived with an intriguing blend of uncertainty and expectation! Forty fighters would enter randomly - but only one could earn a main event title shot at Ultimate Grand Prix VII!

Coltess and Darfus were the fighters who drew numbers 1 and 2. Eager to take his opportunity, Darfus blasted Coltess with raining blows - until everything stopped for entrant #3: VenoMark!

Coltess & Darfus immediately double-teamed the heavyweight entrant. VenoMark threw Darfus into his ally and started working down Coltess. While he did, NightHawk made a surprise return at #4 and launched another 2-on-1 attack! While VM dealt with the numbers game, The Great Arena erupted for another major challenger entering early: DECEPTION! This prompted Coltess & Darfus to turn to The Hitman with more double-teaming! The balance was finally upset when last year's Battle Royale winner Kron made a surprise return at #6 -- instantly eliminating NightHawk! This was quickly followed by VenoMark taking care of Coltess, and DECEPTION beating Darfus.

The big early entrances continued with Hall of Famer Oozaru making a surprising entrance at #8! Grand Slam Launch Runner-Up Damo came in at #9! The arena went wild for the arrival of "The Guardian" CaTigeReptile at #11 as she came in swinging at multiple opponents! Alliance heavyweight Statix followed at #12! 2016 Hall of Fame inductee Hokey joined the party at #14 -- eager to end his career with a final Undisputed Championship win at UGP!

The influx of heavyweight competitors so early in the match made it one of the most congested Battle Royales in history! VenoMark and DECEPTION clashed for a while. Kron and Hokey drew packs of fighters - clearly identified as serious threats! At the half-way mark, no one fighter was as an obvious favourite, as MKMaster caused a minor stir with only the seventh elimination for the match!

VenoMark kept himself warm, punching the docket on #20 entrant Zentile. CaTigeReptile greeted Shujinko with a knock-out blow, setting up Hokey for a quick elimination. VenoMark promptly added #19 Killswitch to the exit. The departures a mild reprieve as The_Purple_Bunny entered seconds later #23, followed by the surprise arrival of m0s at #24!

VenoMark directed traffic, recruiting Kron and Oozaru in a three-on-one attack of TPB! Hokey found m0s, putting the surprise entrant on the back foot. When "American Nightmare" LordSkarlet made his entrance at #27 -- he made a bee-line for old nemesis m0s! #29 Corrupt hydraslash came in to give LS a helping hand, but Damo ushered him right out of the match in just 32 seconds! That was nothing compared to Damo's second elimination - an instant meet, greet and sweep of 1 second wonder - #32 MinnyBean! The instant elimination equaled the record of shortest appearance held previous by STEROLIZER - who returned to Battle Royale as a much longer lived #34 entrant!

As BilboFett entered at #40, the match still contained an unprecedented 20 fighters -- half of the field! That number was quickly lessened as The_Purple_Bunny took out Kairyu. A minute later Damo eliminated Philip94, and m0s took care of Asesino. These gave way to two more exits - VenoMark eliminating BilboFett, and DECEPTION ending STEROLIZER's almost 13 minute tour! The bodies were finally starting to fall, but still no one fighter was emerging as an obvious favourite!

The match changed complexion when DECEPTION capitalized on Damo's efforts to eliminate his Koalition teammate CaTigeReptile! The reminder that the match is everyone for themselves kicked th action into a higher gear -- but not everyone took the message to heart! The_Purple_Bunny & Hokey began working together as The United! While VenoMark eliminated Damo with extreme prejudice, The United softened up DECEPTION for TPB to send him out! Kron repeated last year's finish with the elimination of LordSkarlet, while the United went on a tour of the remaining fighters! Hokey made sure Kron didn't make it back-to-back wins, eliminating his fellow Hall of Famer to make it the final four!

m0s had a good run throughout the Battle Royale, but as soon as there were four, his chips were up! VenoMark eliminated m0s and then went to work on Hokey! The_Purple_Bunny happily sat back and watched as his cohort was utterly dominated by VenoMark! Hokey shrugged his attacker off to go after TPB, but The_Purple_Bunny eliminated him! With the benefit of freshness, TPB wound up to deliver several knock out blows -- setting VenoMark up for a heartbreaking elimination! The #3 entrant set a new endurance record, lasting 1 hour 26 minutes 39 seconds in the marathon match!

The near miss is The_Purple_Bunny's ultimate payback for the Steel Cage loss at Supercard 86: Survivor Sequence - Invasion! The 2017 Battle Royale ticks another accolade off TPB's incredible list of career achievements. He now turns to the main event of Ultimate Grand Prix VII, where he will attempt to claim the Undisputed Championship for an unprecedented seventh time!

7. ElJobber defeated United: Mimik (c) in a comprehensive victory! [+3] [Undisputed Championship]
With victories over the 2016 Master's Series and 2017 Grand Slam Launch, ElJobber was the logical challenger for the Undisputed Championship at Supercard 88! January has traditionally been a good time of year for ElJobber, having won the 2011 and 2014 Battle Royale matches, as well as the title at last year's event. Twelve months ago it was Hokey he defeated, as part of the nightmare implosion of The United. History nearly repeated, but at Supercard 87: End Of Days, it was Mimik who earned a gutsy three-way win to claim the title from his teammate, Hokey! Mimik himself has fond memories of January, as winner of the 2012 Battle Royale! Coming off a renaissance year, The United fighter was eager to shrug off the curse and make it a 2-2 night for the team. Unfortunately, ElJobber came to fight, finding his best form at the perfect time! An outstanding performance left absolutely nothing to doubt -- a comprehensive defeat of Mimik! The win earns ElJobber only his fourth Undisputed Championship. Now he sets his sights on the main event of Ultimate Grand Prix VII, where the winner of the Battle Royale match will face the champion!

6. "Invasion Contender Elect" Genku defeated "Y2Juggalo" Violent`J in convincing fashion! [+2]
In November, Genku sold himself as the man to bring the Undisputed Championship, and greatness, to The Invasion for the first time. It was the very plan that made him agree to join The Invasion in the first place, and it won him the election - or so he thought! Both the title shot and The Invasion lie in tatters, torn apart by a war they thought they were winning! Violent`J blew the whistle on alleged electoral fraud after The Invasion's shock end to last year, leading to an official independent inquiry that left Genku in limbo. Violent`J never made any secret of his preferences for another fighter, and when Genku failed to acknowledge his championship pedigree - the alliance soured! Genku lost key matches at Supercard 87 and The Master's Series, but determined self-belief meant placing the blame squarely on VJ! Deluded or not, it gave him the thrust to overwhelm his Hall of Fame opponent in a hard hitting fight! As The Y2Juggalo carted himself out of the coliseum, Genku delivered a message to the night's Championship challenger! He told ElJobber he'd better win that title and hold it real tight, because he'll be taking great pleasure in taking it from him!

5. Poasty defeated United: Murdoink (c) in convincing fashion. [+1] [Division 2 Championship]
By the middle of last year, it seemed as if Poasty had the world at his feet. He won the Division 2 Championship for the first time in a major upset at Pre-Show 80 -- and then it all went horribly wrong! A career threatening injury stripped him of the title, beginning a fight back that seemed destined to reunite him with the gold at Tournament 75. Instead, Murdoink spoiled the dream, enduring Poasty's payback to go on to win the Division 2 title himself at Supercard 86: Survivor Sequence! Murdoink gloated as Poasty succumbed to haunting trauma, escaping defeat when Poasty fought to answer his open challenge at Supercard 87. The 2017 Grand Slam Launch was the antidote Poasty needed, fighting through to the Semi Finals! Having overcome the nightmare, he was ready to finally live the dream of reclaiming the Division 2 Championship! Murdoink could do nothing to stop destiny reuniting Poasty with the belt he never lost! Poasty showed his elation as he finally claimed the title. A scintillating result at Battle Royale! The United's second title defeat!

4. "The United" Shoe & Artanix (c) defeated "The Invasion" DaemonX & Banging in a comprehensive victory! [+1] [Duo Division Championship]
The United boldly announced the cancellation of The Invasion with a victory December 19th, and with their clean sweep of the titles, effortlessly took control with the launch of Monday Night Games. It's the kind of swagger you get when you end the historic 420 day Duo Division Championship reign of Team Xtreme at Supercard 87: End Of Days! It's also a guarantee that surviving remnants of The Invasion are going to try to upset the party! DaemonX & Banging reemerged on January 23, and set their sights on the tandem titles shortly thereafter. It was supposed to be a spiteful strike at Shoe & Artanix -- but it turned into just another bitter defeat for The Invasion! It seems The United are out to set a new standard for the Duo Division Championship, putting the kibosh of last year's 'nightmare' Battle Royale loss to bed with a comprehensive victory!

3. "The Predator" TonyTheTiger defeated United: Mime (c) [+1] [KFL Championship]
Last year's Battle Royale marked the historic first ever KFL Championship defense on a Supercard. Absorbed into the main league after the KFL was dissolved; it went on to be an incredible year for the title - culminating in a shock win by Mime at New Year's Resolution! The title completed The United's claim to every single championship -- something "The Predator" TonyTheTiger could not abide by! With a Supercard 87 win at his back, The Predator stalked his prey into a new year! Bad blood has existed between Mime and TTT since last July, and it came to the boil as Mime struggled to keep a hold of his title! The Predator was too strong, inflicting the first United loss of the night!

2. "The New Generation" Baraka_MK & Onryo defeated Jammer2Omega & Porygonix [+1]
Ever since Jammer2Omega & Porygonix started their rise through the Duo Division ranks, they've been compared to "The New Generation" Baraka_MK & Onryo. Seeing their more experienced peers as a barometer for their progress, J2O & Pory enjoyed several memorable contests during their climb last year. Eager to assess their progress since the last meeting at All-Star Summer Showdown, the hotshot team relished the opportunity. In a string of hard fought battles, this one turned out to be the closest yet! Jammer2Omega & Porygonix still have work to do to break the top tier of the Duo Division, but it's clear they're on the threshold of something big in 2017!

1. Politics & Menas defeated "The Invasion" Jason_Voorhees & edge [+1]
Fighting from underneath, Politics & Menas had losses at New Year's Resolution and Pre-Show 88 driving them to improve upon their year. Jason_Voorhees & edge were only narrow victors at The Long Hard Road. The rematch swung decisively in favour of the fan-favourites, giving Politics & Menas the big win on a Supercard stage!
